You’ve probably heard the expression “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” but do you know which foods are good for your oral health? Tooth-friendly snacking depends on what and when you eat and drink.

The best foods for your teeth are high in nutrients and low in fat, sugar and sodium. If your body is strong and healthy, it’s better equipped to fight the bacteria in your mouth. Nutrient-rich food includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products and lean proteins. Cheese, apples, spinach, carrots, celery and almonds are especially good for teeth. If you’re really craving sugar, drink water with your sugary snack to rinse off any plaque-causing residue on your teeth. This also applies to acidic foods, like citrus fruits.

The American Dental Association recommends limiting your snacks and saving most of your eating for mealtimes. More saliva is released during meals, which washes the teeth and lessens the effects of acid.

Finally, make sure you brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily. After all, tooth-friendly snacking doesn’t do many favors for your teeth if you aren’t also giving them a thorough cleaning each day.
